Ecclesiastes 3:11 – “He has made everything beautiful in its time.”
No single biblical truth was more prevalent in Glenna’s teachings than God’s sovereignty. In fact, she often referred to her central core beliefs as “grace & sovereignty.” So, in a glance toward the heavenlies for Glenna, this Heavenly Treasures is devoted to sovereignty.
Glenna would say that either God is 100% in control, or He is 0% in control. It cannot be anything in between. R.C. Sproul put it this way, “If there is one single molecule running around loose, totally free of God’s sovereignty, then we have no guarantee that a single promise of God will ever be fulfilled.” To put it more bluntly, if there is anything, or anyone, that operates outside of God’s dominion, then we can’t trust the Bible. The Bible tells us exactly what happens in the future, and what ultimately happens to everyone, both believers and un-believers. If there was a force outside God’s authority, then His plan could possibly be thwarted.
Now, it’s relatively easy to accept that truth when we see good things happen or are feeling thankful for something. The truth is put to the test when we see evil in the world, or we are experiencing pain and trauma. It’s easy to lose sight that God is in control when everything seems so out of control. It is those times most importantly, that we must remember what Paul wrote in Romans 8:28, “And we know ALL things work together for good to those who love God,” or Psalm 103:19 that says, “The Lord has established His throne in heaven, and His Kingdom rules over ALL,” or Proverbs 16:4 which reads, “The Lord has made ALL for Himself, YES, even the wicked for the day of doom.” Notice he didn’t just say “some” things, but ALL things. Not just the good things, but the ones that bring us pain too. God is never at lunch. He is always on the throne.
Now, I fully recognize that it’s one thing to believe this truth intellectually, it’s a completely different matter to LIVE it. Notice our website is titled, LIVING a lasting legacy. Biblical truths become more personal and powerful when they go from our brains to our hearts. God knows what He is doing even if don’t, and our ways are not His ways. (Isaiah 55:8-9). We don’t, can’t, or won’t see how all things work together this side of heaven, but rest assured they do. Our job is simply to trust.
There’s an old story about the WW2 soldiers who stormed the shores of Normandy who were certain their mission was doomed. To a man, they were convinced they would fail. However, the pilots that flew cover in the skies overhead knew immediately the mission would succeed, and many were quoted as saying such. The takeaway: on the ground, in the middle of things, our vision and understanding is limited. We are often incapable of understanding what God is doing, and it’s hard to trust what we can’t make sense of. Sometimes He shows us clearly, what He’s doing, but most of the time, we may not know what He’s doing, so we just must find peace in knowing He does. There is a direct correlation to how much peace you experience in your life to how much you trust that God is in control!
Oh, how I wish I could continue. So much more to cover. Hold any thoughts or questions for our quarterly Zoom time, but for now, let’s conclude with Proverbs 16:9, “A man’s heart plans his way, BUT the Lord directs his steps.” We may think we’re in control, but thankfully, we are not. Be thankful every day that God is sovereign over ALL, and directing our steps, even when we don’t know where that may lead.
Prayer:
Father, help us to always remember and rejoice in knowing that no matter what happens in our life, you have always been, and always will be on the throne and in control. It’s easy to lose hope and wallow in the pangs and pains of life in the flesh. Continue to work in us to lean not on our own understanding but keep our sights on you. The more we trust you, the more peace we enjoy, because we know peace is not a feeling. It is a person. It is Jesus. Thank you Lord.
